Fashion Design Workshop is for all
campers who would like to take their
aspiring fashion design skills to the
next level. Campers will be taken
through the different stages of the
fashion design process in a hands-on workshop. Campers learn the history of fashion design and the ins and outs of the fashion industry today from behind the scenes. Campers learn about design development, research fashion designers and their styles, sketch a fashion figure, construct a concept board, learn how to use a sewing machine, explore fabric selection, practice visual merchandising and learn the importance of a fashion show and how it works. Then campers showcase their innovative designs in our designer Showcase on the last day of camp. See how fashion comes together and be a part of it right here at Fashion Design Workshop!

THE HISTORY OF FASHION DESIGN
Learn how it all got started. From fashion
dolls to fashion show production. What is
fashion design and how does it effect our
everyday lives?

HOW TO GET STARTED IN
FASHION DESIGN
Meet with industry professionals and learn
the business of fashion design. Get the
inside scoop on what it takes to become a
fashion designer and what qualifications are
needed to get your talent noticed.

FAMOUS DESIGNERS
Become familiar with the well known
designers of the 20th Century. From Coco
Chanel to Karl Lagerfeld to Donna Karan;
get inspiration from the masters of design.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING
Learn the art of visual merchandising. Understand window dressing and fashion coordination. Study store displays and learn from professionals how to effectively display a line of clothing. Using mannequins, campers construct their own displays for their own line of clothing.

We are happy to announce that Fashion
Design Workshop Campers will have a visit
to the BETSEY JOHNSON boutique in
the Tysons Galleria Mall. Campers will
meet with a BETSEY JOHNSON
representative and learn all about fashion
and this great design company.

LEARN HOW TO USE THE
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Campers are shown how to select textiles
and how to use different types of fabric.
Then they are given instruction on how to
properly use a sewing machine and tools
of the trade.

TREND FORECASTING
Campers learn about trend forecasting –
what will be hot this summer/fall? How can
we possibly know? Who makes these
decisions and what are their influences?

CREATE A DESIGN BOARD
Using concept boards and illustration, campers learn how to come up with a design theme through understanding fashion moods and layout techniques in a collage manner.

FASHION ILLUSTRATION
Bring your ideas to life on paper through sketching. Understand the structure of the human body form and how it incorporates into
fashion design.

MERCHANDISING & RETAIL
Learn about fashion buying, the apparel business and how stores and designers work together. Campers create their own line of clothing, their own brand name and develop a marketing technique.

FIELD TRIP TO BOUTIQUES
Campers will go on a field trip to the mall and visit local boutiques and famous department stores. They study the individual designs and styles of different designers.

MISS DESIGNER CHALLENGE
Campers will be given a mystery box of
everyday household items and will be asked to design a wearable article of clothing by using only what is inside. Let your imagination run wild, learn how to work with limited resources
as you race against the clock to meet your deadline!

DESIGNER SHOWCASE AT THE GRADUATION FASHION SHOW
Fashion shows and trunk shows are the perfect way to showcase a designer’s new clothing line. On the last day of camp, all campers participate in our graduation finale.
